The park is located some 550 km to the north of Bangkok if one passes Khon Kaen to reach to the park. The distance between the park's headquarters and Khon Kaen is about 110 km.
The park is set in sandstone hills of the Phetchabun Range. Tropical broad-leaved evergreen forest cover some 60% of the park. However pine is the popular symbol of the park.
The climate is comfortably pleasant with cool morning and evening even in the hot season. The hottest months are March to June when temperatures frequently rise above 35ºC. The rainy season takes place during the months : May to September.
It is said that some mammals such as elephant, Black bear, Malaya sun bear, tiger and leopard still roam the parts of the park. Extensive networks of scenic trails sneaking through the pine forest of the park would take one several days to explore. The park is a popular place for the bird watchers as well.
A wonderful view of the Phetchabun Range exist from atop Phu Phajit, a 1271 meter high flat topped mountain at the eastern end of the park. A 7 km long trail to the top takes about 6 to 7 hrs to hike. Another good view point is 1134 meter high limestone edifice named Pha Lom Pha Kong which takes 5 to 7 hrs of walking to mount. Campers who wish to overnight at the submits must bring their own equipment and supplies along with warm clothing.
There are several fine water falls and caves which are homes of bats in the park. At least two scenic trails starting near the headquarters lead to imposing pine stands in the center of the park.
Suggested 6 days, 5 nights trip
Day 1 Leave Bangkok at night by sleeper train.
Day 2 Arrive in Khon Kaen in the early morning. Hire a car for a 110 km trip to the park's headquarters where there is a camping site. The whole afternoon is spent hiking through the scenic trails. Overnight in the camp site.
Day 3 Whole day hiking through the park. Overnight in the camp site.
Day 4 Hire a car to get to the starting point to climb 1271 meters Phu Phajit. Camp at the submit.
Day 5 Descending in the morning. Hire a car to go back to Khon Kaen. Take a night sleeper train back to Bangkok.
Day 6 In the early morning arrive in Bangkok.
